Today's Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the Golden Globe Nominees this morning.

I've listed the motion picture nominees below.

The initial highlights...Babel received the most nominations.

New comer names who haven't been mentioned very much on the list include Bobby with recognition for the first time this award season, Maggie Gylenhaal for Sherrybaby, Emily Blunt for the Devil Wears Prada.

Double nods were received by Leonardo DiCaprio (Departed and Blood Diamond).

I'm a little bummed that Djimond Hounsou did not get recognized for Blood Diamond, but I am very happy that Adriana Barraza got recognized for Babel.

And Apocolypto best foreign language film...hum? I would have never guessed that as a possibility.

Also, unsurprisingly as predicted awhile back, Helen Mirren received 2 nominations, one for her role in The Queen as Queen Elizabeth II and one nomination for playing Queen Elizabeth I in the TV movie "Elizabeth I."

Speaking of TV noms, my wife will also be happy to know Keifer Sutherland (24) and Hugh Laurie (House) both were nominated for best actor in a dramatic television series.

I can not get into the Golden Globes. It's around 83 of the most elite press corps in the world. The Hollywood Foreign Press doesn't have representatives from big media companies like the BBC, Reuters and Le Monde. It's a well known fact around Hollywood, those that wine-and-dine the HFPA the best, will get this supposed "important" nomination.

Of all the awards given in Hollywood, the GG are by far the most corrupt and has the worst sample of informed voters.

This was an article in the New York Times about the HFPA last year that showcased the corruption. It's refered to in the wikipedia article about the HFPA

I wasn't too surprised by the nominations though "Bobby" in the best picture category sort of threw me for a loop. I enjoyed it but I don't believe it's deserving of best picture. What did surprise me was the lack of mention of "Half Nelson" (more deserving of the best picture nod than "Bobby") and "A Scanner Darkly" which was a great technical achievement - I thought it would certainly make the animated film ballot.

FYI...

The Globes classify any foreign language film as foreign language regardless of country-of-origin. Also, foreign language films are NOT eligible for BP Drama and BP Comedy (probably most relevant to note that for Letters).

These are a little goofy. Bobby? Huh? I'm surprised "Babel" got the most nominations too. No director or screenplay for "Dreamgirls" is also kind of interesting. Perhaps it is losing stream? The RT score has fallen a bit of late.

The absolute best thing is they nominated Michael C. Hall for "Dexter" in TV though. The best new show of the year, and probably the second best show overall (behind "The Wire").

The thing that will hold "Bobby" back is that it was directed by Emelio Estevez. Every time I see him, I only think of Night at the Roxbury.

I am excited that Forest Whitake got nominated for his role in "The Last King of Scotland". I think he was amazing in that film.

Where is Alex Baldwin? He was so great in the Departed.

is it just me, or are the Best Picture candidates this year pretty weak? I don't think "Bobby" should have been nominated.
