Well in 2008, there certainly looks like there will be far fewer sequels, and franchised films...which I can only see hurting the overall summer box office...yet, it should be exciting, right? Some fresh new things...or maybe not. Here's some major players and themes for next Summer.
Sequels for Summer 2008:
Indiana Jones 4 (May 22)
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (July 11)
The Dark Knight (July 18, aka Batman Begins 2)
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (August 1)
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (August 8)
Comic Books & Superheroes:
Iron Man (May 2)
The Incredible Hulk (June 13, not related to Ang Lee's Hulk)
Hancock (July 2...yes, Will Smith on the 4th of July)
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (July 11)
The Dark Knight (July 18)
Haven't we seen this before (re-filmed movies, tv shoes, musicals):
The Day the Earth Stood Still (May 9, based on the 1951 film with the same title)
Speed Racer (May 9, based on the 1960s Japanese cartoon show)
Get Smart (June 20, based on 1960s TV show)
Mamma Mia! (July 18, based on the musical)
Fame (August 15, update of the 1980 musical)
(Related Previous Post on Prince Caspian 1, 2, & 3, Indiana Jones 1, Dark Knight 1, 2, & 3, Iron Man 1, Mamma Mia 1)

I gotta tell ya man, none of those look particularly interesting to me. Maybe 07 was THE year...
to quote freddy mercury:
mama mia, mama mia!
actually, Dark Knight is the movie (and looks like the only movie) that's grabbed my attention. and that coming from an old comic book nerd.
I have to say that the only one of those that I will admit to looking forward to is Prince Caspian. I'll let you guess what the other one is.
Last movie I saw in the theater--Little Miss Sunshine--with this line up looks like it will be a while till I head back.
AK, I'm going to hope you're talking about Mamma Mia not Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants part 2.
From the looks of this clip, I'm very excited for the nest Chronicles of Narnia flick, Prince Caspian. Was my favorite of those books, and looks to be a kick ass flick. Observe...

I'm surprised they are doing another Narnia movie since the first didn't do as well as hoped and it's been a while since the release of the first.
The Dark Knight should be excellent and from what I've seen Iron Man looks good as well. And from the trailer thus far, I did laugh at Get Smart. But I've been duped before.
How far are those stupid pants gonna travel!
The Dark Knight, Speed Racer, Iron Man, and Prince Caspian are the three movies that I'm looking forward to next summer. I suppose that says something that two of those films are based on comic books and another on a cartoon...
If you think that is bad, just wait until 2009. With the Hollywood writers and actors strike of 2008 around the corner, projects are being put on hold because no one wants to commit to a contract anytime after June of next year.
I'm marking my calendar for Prince Caspian and Mamma Mia....I mean the world could always use a little more ABBA!!
Verrry interesting. There are also a HEAP of great films coming out in 2008. (which should relieve some of your friends here)
I'm planning to post a heads-up on the year in film in just a month or two, but you're welcome to beat me to it if you care to.
But I think you're right (thankfully!) - 2008 won't be the year of the sequel. Can we say creativity?
oh my gosh i didn't know about a lot of those!!
Chronicles of Narnia I am all about - Indiana Jones, I'm excited about a new one and that Shia LeBeouf is in it, I think he's great - The Dark Knight is probably one of my top 5 for 2008 - I'm glad they're redoing The Hulk, that one a couple years ago was terrible - and I'm excited about Fame!
i love that you posted all these!! i love movies!!!

They are actually making all the Narnia books into movies which rules. Thought the first one was highly entertaining, not sure exactly how it did box office wise, but it gained more popularity on DVD. Prince Caspian, from the little I've seen and everything I've read, could surpass it. Just a great storyline.
