Harry Potter: Nude, Off The Shelf, and Night Shy

1. Daniel Radcliffe to perform nude on London Stage.
Recently-turned 17 year old Daniel Radcliffe, star of the J. K. Rawlings Harry Potter film series will appear naked in the stage version of Equus next march.

The play Equus is about a boy who blinds six horses with a metal spike.

According to the Associated Press: "In one scene the actor playing Strang is required to simulate sexual ecstasy while riding a horse naked." (via)

2. Get your Harry Potter DVD's while You Can

Just like Disney does with their animated films, Warner Bros. is pulling Harry Potter DVD's off the shelf to be sold only at designated times.

Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban will all be pulled off the shelf December 29th of this year. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire will be pulled February 9, 2007. (via)

3. M Night Shymalan and Harry Potter

Apparently M. Night Shymalan was offered the directing position of the first Harry Potter film, but turned it down to do Unbreakable.

Since then there has been talk of M. Night Shymalan directing one of the last two Harry Potter Films for Universal, but M. Night Shymalan seems hesitant of doing a film that is part of a pre-established series as well as a book adaptation. (via)

I am very curious to what my friends Grete and Allison big Harry Potter Lovers think of these Potter tidbits.

the first one really weirds me out, the second one makes me sad because I don't own them yet (though I've rented them so many times, I should have just bought them when they first come out), and the third one I agree with. I love Harry Potter, and I love M. Night, but he should just keep directing his own ideas and stories that he creates, and not someone else's ideas.

I hate that limited edition DVD/hurry and buy it now or we'll sell it to you again for more money later gimmick. Good thing books aren't like that.

Shymalan's been going steadily downhill. The Village wasn't as good as his first three, and Lady in the Water seems to be getting bad reviews as well, though I haven't seen that myself. On the other hand he'd be working with solid source material here so the story would be tight and we know the visuals would be good. Maybe he should do it to fix up his rep...

I disagree about Shymalan's work going downhill. He is making the stories that matter to him, and they matter to me as well. Living in a religious-belt like I do, the Village resonated so profoundly with me that I almost couldn't stand it.

ANYWAY....that is why I don't think he should make the H.P. film...he tells his own stories. I hope he stays true to his muse and disregards the H.P. franchise.

I'd like to see Shymalan do a straight up film someday. No twist ending, just a straight up drama or something like that.

Why do big name blockbuster movie stars like Daniel Radcliffe always think they have to prove their acting mettle by doing a project so avant garde and titillating?

Animal abuse, naked teenage boys, sexual ectstasy..... in a stage play? Bleah. I guess that's why my uncultured heathen self has always preferred sunny musicals at the theater.

Magnus, I have decided that I want to see Shyamalan do a Romantic Comedy..and then at the end before the credits on black screen w/ white writing I want to see the Words: "Ha, Ha, No Twist."

I saw Lady in the Water last night and definitely enjoyed it, but it still wasn't his best work. I'll save the rest of my comments if RC ever posts about it.

Funny how all the comments on this post have more to do with M. Night than Harry Potter :)

Equus is one of the worst plays I have ever seen. The writing and plot is muddled in a psychologyly disturbed actions of a boy who pokes out the eyes of a horse with an ice pick. If you're going to be nude in a play, at least make it a good play...

aren't there laws about having 17 year olds be nude?

I'm disappointed in Harry Potter.

Just a note - I have read that there are several different versions of the play Equus and that there are versions where the character does not do the scenes nude. I haven't heard which version he is doing, but hopefully he will choose to do it clothed. I would hope that he would consider his image and the children that look up to him.

I agree with Allison... hopefully he will choose the clothed version for image's sake. I was disturbed to read about this last week - so much for the innocence of little Harry Potter...

Equus is by no stretch of the imagination a perfect play, but its writer, Peter Shaffer (who also wrote Amadeus) was certainly doing some truly bright things in the film: like discuss how each of us are fallen and broken and want to be healed. The boy's relationship with the horse is shocking because he believes it is his relationship with God. I agree that Shaffer's choices with sexuality were designed more to arouse than to provoke to thought, but I wouldn't count this move by Radcliffe as another Blue Room.

thanks for posting your comment Will, that's very interesting, and your link to the Nichole Kidman play is interesting as well.
