Babel received recognition and significant buzz at this year's Cannes Film Festival, has really mobalized itself as a critical favorite.
I think Babel will be an excellent movie, and that many critics will love it, give it critical awards and paste it into various spots of their top 10.
I am also anxious to see this film BUT, many people have been quick to include it in their top 5 choices for what they predict will get nominated for best picture.
As I did with the movie the Blood Diamond, I am going to site the cast and crew that have previously been nominated, to get a sense of what type of contenders and repeat nominees may surface in all categories including technical categories.
Previous Academy Award nominees in the cast and crew of Babel:
- Cate Blanchett (won supporting actress for The Aviator, nominated best lead for Elizabeth)
- Brad Pitt (nominated best supporting actor for Twelve Monkeys)
- Composer Gustavo Santaolalla (won best score for Brokeback Mountain)
- Cinemotographer Rodrigo Prieto (nominated for Brokeback Mountain)
- Editor Stephen Mirrione (won for Traffic)
- Production Designer Brigitte Broch (won for Moulin Rouge!, nominated for Romeo + Juliet)
Certainly not a bad crew, and I think some of this crew and quite possibly some of the acting talent, could get recognition by the Academy, but I don't think Alejandro González Iñárritu's creative film will be mainstream enough to get a best picture nomination.

I'm making my selections for the Toronto International Film Fest tonight and think I'm going to pick Babel. In spite of the fact the screening I'll go to (Sat morning, I think) probably won't have the stars there or a Q&A, and in spite of the fact that it'll be in released to theatres soon after, thus failing a few of my normal festival picking strategies...
But I LOVED 21 Grams and Amores Perros... And would love to see Babel before its released to theatres.
Hope I get a ticket.
This has been my #1 anticipated movie of the year all year long. I can't wait and they've moved it back I think three times now. Argh. They've done the same thing with The Fountain, which is now my #2.
Anyway, yeah quite the crew, except I believe Memoirs of a Geisha *won* cinematography, as that was the specific moment when I thought "gee, BBM might lose Picture".

Maureen, good luck with your picks! Knowing from previous years, it has been extremely hard to get some of the big name films like Babel. If you are going to see it, let me know what you think. I'll be seeing it at the festival as well.

RC: really? I've gotten the impression that Inarritu is becoming more and more "mainstream" (at least in how many people have heard of his films). In fact, I was surprised at how quickly "the director of Amores Perros" jumped into the American cinematic limelight with 21 Grams. Adding even bigger names like Brad Pitt can only help Inarritu's popularity with American audiences. I would much more easily see this getting a nomination over Blood Diamond. Maybe that was the point of your post, so I'll just be quiet now. :-)
I don't agree but it's a good point. Just looking at last year's list of nominees, most folks hadn't even heard, never mind seen, most of the nominees. It's still a bit early but I think this particular movie could be last year's "Good night and Good Luck". Either way, I can't wait to see Pitt's performance in this.
