A Revolutionary Plan

So, it's pretty annoying having a day off on Tuesday but having to work Monday and Wednesday.

So, I've had a thought - from now on I'm calling 4th of July Independence Day exclusively.

I encourage you to do that same. That way some day down the road congress can easily change the date of Independence Day to the 1st Friday in July instead of landing on July 4th. Hence, Independence Day would always be a 3 day weekend.

And here I was rejoicing that this holiday was not a three day weekend. It's because I'm a mail carrier, see, and the first workday after a three day weekend is just hell.

Eh, that's like calling New Year's Day the First Friday of the Year! for simplicity's sake, mate.

The following news articles are about the dangers of changing the dates of public holidays, or, rather, the dates of events traditionally associated with the holiday.

In this case, by bowing to political pressure, organisers of a world-famous ultra marathon have upset churches.

not knowing what day of the week it is (still) creates the illusion of freedom

Sounds good to me...'cause a Wednesday 4th of July is really awkward having 2 days of work before and after the holiday. I took this Monday off, but of course, used precious annual leave to do it...next year it'll likely be 2 days to take, unless I suck it up and work them all... I could go for that idea of the 1st Friday observance of Independence Day to avoid some of the mid-week awkwardness.
