quick "The Devil Wears Prada" thoughts

This past weekend I was flying and the inflight movie was The Devil Wears Prada. (Readers who know me, will probably find the showing of this film on my flight somewhat ironic.)

I found the film to be quite enjoyable, it was like a romantic comedy, but instead of being about the romantic tribulations of a young man and a young woman, it was about the on-again off-again interest a woman (Anne Hathaway) has with her cut-throat and serious job.

Was this movie amazing, would I recomend it to thousands...nah. Yet, it's good...it's just a movie where, "it is what it is."

In this film, I was most impressed with the acting. I though everyone did a great job with their parts. While the roles are not complicated in an Academy Award deserving way, I was especially impressed with Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway.

Meryl Streep did a good job as we'd expect her too...although I'm hesitant to say that because I find it unfortunate that she will likely receive a best actress nomination for this film, and her role is neither lead nor earth shattering.

It seems unlikely the Academy Awards will nominate Prada for anything, though if in fact that is the case I would expect Streep's role to be considered supporting. Meryl Streep is undeniably a badass in pretty much everything, though Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt are the two I would specifically single out from the film. Is Prada an overwhelmingly amazing film? Perhaps not, but it's one a few of the year that actually display both dexterity and understanding. Sure, some of the acting isn't as nuanced as some of the Academy Award-nominated performances of late, but a nearly imperceptible drop in acting quality in exchange for the tact and depth that sadly excludes most Oscar-heralded films is a trade I'd make any day.

Aside from Meryl Streep there isn't alot of Academy Award material. Anne Hathaway hardly plays a role that requires exceptional acting, and some of the other characters we've have seen before - Sex In The City / Will & Grace.

Stylish, slick and polished yes, but going to challenge the heavy weight material this year, i doubt it.

Saw it in the theater for a "girls night out" thing, wouldn't have spent that much money on it otherwise, probably just waited for it to come around on the cable.
