Predicting the Best Supporting Actress Nominations in April

This past year the thinest catagory by far was the actress catagories, specificly supporting actress catagories.

Of the five eventual nominees, only one of the nominees had ever been nominated before (Cate Blanchett) and actually, she was the only one with any sort of accepted pre-2006 star power. Who remember Jennifer Hudson from Amrican Idol? Had anyone paid much attention to Rinko Kikuchi or Adriana Barraza before Babel? And who would have expected Abigail Breslin to get an academy nomination before Dakota Fanning?

And yet the nominees for supporting actress offered no real surprises by the end of award season. Blanchett, Breslin, Hudson, Kikuchi, and Barraza were the chosen 5.

This year the potential for supporting roles for actresses looks a little broader, and it's without further ado that I make my first academy awards predictions for best supporting actress for 2007.

End of April
Academy Award Supporting Actress Predictions
Catherine Keener - Synecdoche, New York
Samantha Morton - The Golden Age
Mena Suvari - The Mysteries of Pittsburg
Meryl Streep - Lions for Lambs
Vanessa Redgrave - Atonement

Uh, no. Mena Suvari won't get attention if she didn't for American Beauty. And of your three choices of Briony (some people chose two of them) you choose Vanessa Redgrave? Okay. I'd rather predict her for Evening, but that's just me. The most sane of your predictions is Morton, which is kind of up in the air, since it's something that is. Will she steal the show? Will she even have anything to do? And a lot of people remember J-Hud from AI, and I know many bloggers who said she would win from the very beginning, especially Nat (TFE) who first said when the news came out of the film BEFORE SHE WAS EVEN CAST, he said that whoever plays Effie will have an Oscar. Aha.

Keener has has some really strong supporting roles in recent years, wouldn't mind her taking the award.
