Now I know some people have there complaints but I think the reasons I liked it primarily were:
(1) It was fun and entertaining, but still a little atypical and unique.
(2) Fun portrayl of simple comic characters.
(3) It is a film that can be added to canon of art and media dealing with concepts of community.
(4) It touched on my own most touching film theme: The Average Person is a Hero, Not Because They're Trying to Be A Hero, but because they're in the right place at the right time and have the personal character to stand up to the task.

Thanks for stopping by. You have been added to our blogroll.
I have yet to see this movie. I am very interested though. Most people hated the village, I thought it was pretty brilliant. A monster movie without any monsters.
I haven't seen this movie yet, but I really enjoy M. Night Shyamalan's other films. I find them very comedic, I think most people take what he's saying to seriously and therefore dislike most of what he does. As well, its nice to see the average hero getting more play.
Haven't seen it yet, stopped watching M.Night movies at 'Unbreakable' but i might just go see this.
Man, I am so emotionally overwhelmed by His movies I cannot speak for an hour at least after seeing his movies. I don't know what it is about them, but Shyamlan is a genius.
I liked the film overall, and surprisingly I had not thought of the community angle until you brought it up. My thoughts on the movie can be found at http://faith2hope2love.wordpress.com, if you are interested.
I haven't seen it and didn't really plan on it. The only Shayamalan movie I really enjoy still is Unbreakable . . . the one that nobody else likes.
Thanks for linking to my post, husband :-)
RC, I think you're the first person I know of who has actually liked this movie.
I want to see it anyway though, because Christopher Doyle did the cinematography (he did all of Wong Kar Wai's films, if you've seen any of those. Great work), and I'd like to see what the guy can actually do with a real budget.
That said, I still have a feeling I'm not going to like the movie.

I liked it, Lady in the Water. It was unique. Still--not his strongest movie. Anyone remember Inky and the Brain? Inky is always saying "Narf", and I had trouble getting past that in the movie! Hee hee!
Why don't people like the Village? What are they expecting? A horror movie? He's telling stories, he's not trying to scare anybody. I constantly have to convince timid friends to watch the Village ("Oh, no...I can't stand scary movies), and I reassure them, they watch it, and then they thank me. I live in a severe Bible belt, with all kinds of right-wing Law-abiding Christians, everything from mild Fundamentalists to hat-wearing, bearded Mennonites and Hutterites. The Village SPOKE to me, people. There are villages all around me, filled with people who would rather lie or die than leave their safe little haven and enter the real world. If you are fortunate enough to live somewhere free of that bondage, go ahead and hate the movie, I guess, and count yourself lucky.
So far I've really liked everything M. Night Shyamalan has done. I don't see what the problem with The Village was either, but not everyone hated it (Rolling Stone loved it, for example). I think it was much stronger than Signs. So I'm looking forward to Lady in the Water.
I enjoyed Lady in the Water and would watch it again. It reminded me of Unbreakable (which is one of my favorites of his) in that they both bring fantasy/comic book elements into everyday life events and they both deal with what you said - #4, the hero stuff. It's just such a great message - that everyone has a purpose and finds completion when they fulfill that purpose.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.
I've seen most of M. Knight Shyamalan's movies and enjoyed them apart from The Village.
Ah, crap. Now I gotta rent it when it comes out on DVD, consider your points, and reconsider my own review of the film. You've made some good observations with this.
We're seeing The Descent this weekend. I can't believe I've actually talked my wife into seeing it, but she's willing to give it a chance since the reviews are so generally positive. That's what made me want to see it, too. My hopes are high. The idea of a movie actually being the scariest thing since Alien??!? WOW! I admit, I'm buying the hype... but I can't wait to see if the hype is justified. I'm going to demand my money back if this movie doesn't mess me up for life. ;)
