September Best Actress Predictions

In the past couple years it seems like the Best Actress race "settles" first and the long list of names gets short far quicker than some of the other list.

Part of this is due to limited stand out lead roles for women, the other part is perhaps those lead roles really stand out.

The best actor race seems completely up in the air, and while there is room for surprises in this category as well, once we get an idea of how certain films and roles are perceived, I have a feeling this year will also have a pretty consistent group of women who make the award circuit in a few a months.

In the meantime - let's make guesses.

Tier One - My Current Predicted 5

Tier Two - In My Mind Easy Contenders

Tier Three - Probably Not, But Who Knows

(pictured top to bottom: Gabourey Sidibe in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, Carey Mulligan in An Education, Shohreh Aghdashloo in The Stoning of Soraya M, and Penélope Cruz in Broken Embraces)

At this moment I wish these three would be included.

Pfeiffer in CHERI
Bening in MOTHER & CHILD
Mulligan in AN EDUCATION

I know that Meryl Streep is loved by all but I really hope that she is not nominated.

And Marion Cotillard for lead...I actually would love to see her there too.

@ andrew - i'll be interested in seeinf mother & child plays into award season at all.

Why not Meryl? Her role in Julie & Julia is certainly going to remain on people's radar through award season - I would be very surprised to see if she's forgotten.

Cotillard could go supporting of course, but I imagine they'll get more noms for their ad dollars if they can push one of the women as lead.

I know it's uncommon in this current movie world but I'm not a Meryl fan...and I suppose that it's difficult to play Julia Child without it seeming like mimicry but I think that had this not been a real person the performance would not have been that well loved. I mean take Nicole K in The Hours [not to say she's better than Meryl] but regardless of Virginia or not it felt like a 'real person' I know that it's not the consensus but for me it just felt like a 'performance' and Meryl was saying look at me acting. But oh well.
