Gnarly=Beyond the Extreme

For the past couple of weeks I've been enjoying the Gnarls Barkley CD St. Elsewhere.

Not everyone enjoys this CD as much as I do. I'm not the underground hip-hop type, or even the type of person to get too excited about main-stream hip-hop groups like the Black Eyed Peas.

I enjoy most of the songs on the album, except for "The Boogie Monster" (because it's creepy).

But my favorite song has got to be the first track "Go-Go-Gadget Gospel" because just as Ray Charles used Gospel roots in his music so have they in this song, as well as other tracks on the album. (Even though my wife thought it sounded like I was listening to tejano music when she heard me listening to this track for the first time.)

Just one little note of importance, as I've mentioned Gnarls Barkley some people recognize the name and even associate it with a few songs, (namely "Crazy.") But most people say things like "I like his music," or something like that. BUT Granles Barkley is namely two people...Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo (pictured to the left).

This is the type of CD, I can play and just listen to, I think it's a whole lot of fun.

Update: Paula has drawn my attention to a Gnarls Barkley contest online put on by Fluevog Shoes, were you'd win an iPod, Gnarls Apperal and a $200 gift card. Check out the contest here.

Crazy has been getting tons of airplay on the top 40/hip hop station and the mix station here in Dallas/Fort Worth...

hey, they got a nod on my best-of-2006-so-far list, although i deducted points for 'boogie monster' and (weird you didn't mention it) 'necromancer.' i guess i'm still kinda prudish, but those were quite nasty.

sorry for the cheesy / desperate link...

That is an awesome album. Go-Go Gadget is one of my faves too.

I know who DJ DangerMouse is, but who is Cee Lo?

It is a really solid album. "Gone, Daddy, Gone" is a track I always look forward to hearing when I have this album on. Does this qualify as underground hip-hop or what? I honestly don't know. I think of them as like a cross between PM Dawn and Outkast.

Yes, I said PM Dawn.

I am so daggoen old I have not idea who these people are. Now get off my lawn!

Sigh....it's time for a trip to the other side of the radio dial.

I think they were underground up until the time they appeared on MTV>

I think they were underground until they appeared on MTV. I just saw the video, it is wild, it is one big ink blot test!

haven't seen the video, but you're right, cubicle rev., the song is ubiquitous. so much so that they pulled 'crazy' off the shelves in england for fear of overexposure.

and they def wouldn't qualify as underground hip hop because this isn't a rap act, even though cee-lo can rap, much like his contemporaries and fellow atlanta Dungeon-mates in OutKast - w/ whom he traveled in the same circles.

heck, he was even on a carlos santana song a few years back.

Although I am please that so many people have gotten very into "Gnarls Barkley", I am still wondering how Cee-Lo remained under the radar for so long. It is unfortunate that the greatness of this album may get ruined by over exposure. Glad there has been some shelf pulling to slow down the monster but who's telling the radio stations to calm down already?
